The Toronto After Dark Film Festival invites filmmakers worldwide to submit their latest genre films for its highly anticipated 2026 edition. Celebrating two decades of thrilling audiences, the festival has established itself as a leading showcase for independent horror, science fiction, action, and cult cinema.

Each year, the event draws thousands of passionate film fans and more than one hundred media and industry representatives. The result is significant exposure for selected films, often generating widespread reviews, industry buzz and, in some cases, distribution deals. For emerging and established filmmakers alike, the festival has become an important launching pad within the global genre film community.

Five Nights of Thrilling Cinema

The 2026 Toronto After Dark Film Festival will take place October 14–18, 2026, at the Scotiabank Theatre in Toronto. Known for its lively atmosphere and devoted audiences, the festival presents a carefully curated lineup of feature and short films from around the world.

In addition to screenings, audiences can enjoy filmmaker Q&A sessions, where directors and creators share behind-the-scenes insights into their productions. Social gatherings and special events also provide fans with opportunities to meet the creative teams behind the films.

Beyond the in-person experience, the festival maintains a strong digital presence, keeping audiences engaged year-round through updates shared with more than 80,000 newsletter subscribers and social media followers.

What Selected Filmmakers Can Expect

Films chosen for the official programme benefit from a professional screening environment with high-quality projection and sound. Each title is also featured within the festival’s extensive promotional campaign, which includes online marketing, email outreach and other publicity initiatives.

One of the highlights of the festival is its enthusiastic audience. Screenings typically attract large crowds of genre fans whose reactions and word-of-mouth recommendations help generate excitement for the featured films.

Press coverage is another major advantage for participating filmmakers. The festival attracts journalists from major entertainment publications and genre media outlets, resulting in hundreds of published reviews and articles each year. Coverage in outlets such as Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and Filmmaker Magazine has helped raise the profile of numerous festival selections.

Toronto After Dark also supports filmmakers beyond the event itself. Industry connections and exposure can help open doors to distribution opportunities in both domestic and international markets.

Awards Chosen by Fans

Rather than relying solely on juries, the festival allows audiences to play a central role in determining award winners. The Adam Lopez Audience Choice Awards honour the best feature and short films, with Gold, Silver and Bronze recognitions in each category. Volunteers also select their own winner through the Harvey Lalonde Volunteers Choice Award.
