St. Catharines Seeks Poet Laureate to Honour 150th Anniversary

January – December 2026
St. Catharines

The City of St. Catharines is extending an invitation to local poets to apply for the role of Poet Laureate as part of its year-long celebration of the city’s 150th anniversary. This honorary appointment, running from January 2026 to December 2026, will allow a seasoned wordsmith to serve as an ambassador for poetry, civic pride and community engagement throughout milestone events and cultural initiatives.

The Poet Laureate position is designed to amplify the literary arts within St. Catharines and enrich public life through original poetry, readings, community workshops, and special projects that reflect the character and history of the city. An honourarium of $2,500 will support the individual’s creative contributions, including commissioned works tied to civic celebrations.

What the Role Entails

The chosen Poet Laureate will be expected to represent St. Catharines at official and community gatherings by creating and presenting original poems tailored to various civic occasions. This includes commemorations and events connected to the city’s 150th anniversary, which marks a significant cultural and historical milestone since the city’s incorporation in 1876.

Beyond public readings, the Poet Laureate will work closely with the City’s Cultural Services team to lead or participate in outreach activities such as literary workshops, mentorship sessions, and community writing projects. A key component of the appointment is the completion of a legacy project that captures the spirit of St. Catharines and leaves a lasting contribution to the city’s cultural landscape.

Applicants must reside in St. Catharines and remain living in the city for the entirety of the appointment. Ideal candidates will demonstrate a strong creative portfolio, active involvement in the local or broader poetry community, and a genuine commitment to public engagement. Experience in presentation, mentorship, or collaborative artistic work will be considered an asset.

How to Apply

Poets interested in the role should prepare a comprehensive application that includes a letter of interest outlining relevant experience, artistic vision, proposed outreach efforts, and a concept for the legacy project. A resume or CV showcasing publications, community involvement and professional achievements in the literary arts is also required, along with three to five recent work samples and a brief biography.

Applications are reviewed by a selection committee composed of cultural staff, arts advisory members, and a community expert in poetry or literary arts. Selection criteria focus on the candidate’s body of work, demonstrated ability to engage diverse audiences, and potential to represent St. Catharines with distinction throughout the anniversary year.

By establishing this role, St. Catharines aims to honour the voices and stories that shape its cultural identity, fostering a deeper connection between residents and the rich heritage of their city. The Poet Laureate will play an integral part in interpreting that history with poetic insight and community spirit during this landmark celebration.
