June 3 – 14, 2026
Factory Theatre, Toronto
The Toronto Opera Festival returns in June 2026 with an exciting programme that celebrates both iconic works and daring new creations in the operatic art form. Presented by Opera 5, this festival offers audiences in Toronto a blend of cherished classics and cutting-edge contemporary opera that highlights the depth, emotion and storytelling power of vocal music. This year’s schedule runs from June 3–14, 2026, bringing performances to the stage and showcasing extraordinary talent from Canada and beyond.
Opera 5 is a Toronto-based company known for producing chamber opera and nurturing emerging artists through programmes like the Portfolio Artist Internship, which gives young professionals hands-on experience on stage and behind the scenes. The 2026 festival continues this mission, pairing seasoned performers with rising stars to create compelling and unforgettable performances.
Puccini Double Bill – Suor Angelica & Gianni Schicchi
The festival opens with a stunning double bill featuring two contrasting masterpieces by Giacomo Puccini, performed at Theatre Passe Muraille. Running June 3–7, 2026, this pairing brings together the poignant spirituality of Suor Angelica and the comic brilliance of Gianni Schicchi in an intimate chamber adaptation.
In Suor Angelica, audiences will experience a deeply emotional story of love, loss and redemption, anchored by luminous music that speaks to the heart. In lively contrast, Gianni Schicchi delivers a spirited and humorous tale of family intrigue and clever scheming, filled with memorable melodies and operatic wit. By staging these works together, Opera 5 highlights the expressive range of Puccini’s music and provides a rich evening of operatic theatre.
World Premiere – Parḗlios
From June 11–14, 2026, the festival presents the world premiere of Parḗlios, a bold new opera created by Canadian composer Cecilia Livingston and librettist Duncan McFarlane. This innovative production blends opera with installation, movement, percussion, choir and visual storytelling to explore urgent themes such as climate change, migration and humanity’s connection to the natural world.
Parḗlios pushes the boundaries of traditional opera by incorporating contemporary artistic elements that engage multiple senses and invite deeper reflection. With choreography, percussion ensemble and immersive design, this work promises to be a highlight of the festival and a compelling experience for audiences seeking something fresh and thought-provoking in the operatic realm.
