SummerWorks Performance Festival 2026

SummerWorks Performance Festival 2026: Back to the Future | Forward to the Past

August 6 – 16, 2026
Various Locations

Now in its 37th year, the SummerWorks Performance Festival returns to Toronto from August 6 to 16, 2026, transforming the city into an expansive stage for innovative and boundary-pushing work. Known for activating both traditional venues and unconventional spaces, the festival unfolds across theatres, parks, galleries, and transit hubs, inviting audiences to experience performance in dynamic and unexpected ways.

A cornerstone of Canada’s contemporary arts landscape, SummerWorks continues to champion experimentation, collaboration, and new voices. The 2026 edition builds on this reputation, presenting a programme that reflects the urgency and diversity of today’s creative practices.

Artist-Led Programming and Associate Artists

Under the artistic direction of Michael Caldwell, this year’s festival is shaped in part by its evolving Associate Artists programme. For 2026/27, SummerWorks welcomes five new artists: Nova Bhattacharya & Suvendrini Lena, Amy Nostbakken, and Norah Sadava & Vicky Araico. These artists bring distinct, interdisciplinary practices that contribute to the festival’s forward-thinking curatorial approach.

They join the current 2025/26 Associate Artists—The Switch Collective, Johnnie McNamara Walker, and Chimerik 似不像—forming a dynamic group whose combined perspectives help guide the festival’s artistic vision. Together, these artists play a key role in shaping programming that prioritises process, research, and meaningful audience engagement.

Diverse Works Across Disciplines

With more than 40 projects and over 200 artists, SummerWorks 2026 offers a rich and varied programme spanning theatre, dance, live art, and hybrid forms. Audiences can expect a wide range of experiences, from intimate solo performances to large-scale, site-responsive works that engage directly with Toronto’s urban environment.

This diversity allows the festival to move fluidly across genres while maintaining a strong emphasis on innovation. Each project contributes to broader conversations around identity, memory, place, and the evolving nature of performance.

Accessibility and Community Engagement

Accessibility remains central to the SummerWorks experience. The festival’s Pay-What-You-Decide ticketing model helps reduce financial barriers, ensuring wider access to performances and events. This commitment is further reflected in inclusive programming and partnerships with community organisations across the city.

By centring accessibility and representation, SummerWorks continues to foster an environment where diverse audiences can engage with and feel reflected in contemporary performance.

A Platform for Exploration and Connection

As it enters its 37th year, SummerWorks remains a vital meeting point for artists and audiences alike. The 2026 festival invites attendees to explore new ideas, encounter varied perspectives, and experience performances that resonate both personally and collectively.

From August 6 to 16, 2026, Toronto once again becomes a hub for creative exchange—where performance is not only presented, but lived as a shared and evolving dialogue.
