Barrie Film Festival Short Film Competition Returns for 2026
Early Bird: August 14, 2026
Final Deadline: September 4, 2026
Notification Date: September 25, 2026
The Barrie Film Festival is once again inviting filmmakers to showcase their creativity through its annual Short Film Competition. The popular programme highlights outstanding work from regional, national, and international filmmakers. Selected films will screen publicly during the festival’s Short Film Program Showcase in October 2026.
As one of the festival’s audience favourites, the competition celebrates fresh ideas, compelling storytelling, and emerging creative talent. It also provides filmmakers with valuable exposure before engaged audiences and an experienced jury.
Five Competition Categories
The competition welcomes films in five distinct categories. These include Canadian High School, Local Short, Canadian Live-Action Short, Canadian Animated Short, and International Short.
High school students from across Canada may submit films between one and ten minutes in length. Meanwhile, the Local Short category recognises filmmakers from Barrie, Orillia, and Simcoe County. Canadian live-action and animated categories welcome creators from across the country, while the International category is open to filmmakers outside Canada.
A winner will be selected in each category. In addition, festival audiences will vote for the popular People’s Choice Award following the Shorts Showcase.
Submission Requirements
All entries must be ten minutes or less, including credits. Eligible genres include narrative, documentary, animation, and experimental films. However, corporate and promotional productions are not accepted.
Films must be submitted digitally through FilmFreeway in MP4 or MOV format. They must also be presented in high definition with a minimum resolution of 1920 × 1080. Productions in languages other than English require embedded English subtitles.
Filmmakers must own all necessary rights for music, images, and other copyrighted material used in their work. In addition, any use of Artificial Intelligence must be disclosed during the submission process. Disclosure does not affect eligibility.
A Platform for Emerging Talent
The Barrie Film Festival has built a reputation for supporting independent filmmakers. The Short Film Competition offers an excellent opportunity for new creators to screen their work before enthusiastic audiences and industry professionals.
A jury reviews every eligible submission using criteria such as storytelling, originality, technical execution, creative vision, and overall impact. Animated entries also receive additional consideration for animation technique, visual artistry, and sound design.
Submit Before the Deadline
Filmmakers interested in participating should submit their entries before the Early Bird deadline of August 14, 2026, to receive discounted entry fees. The final submission deadline is September 4, 2026, with successful entrants notified by September 25, 2026.
Whether launching a first short film or presenting an experienced body of work, the Barrie Film Festival Short Film Competition offers an outstanding platform to reach new audiences and celebrate the art of independent filmmaking.
