Barrie Culture Days 2026 Celebrates Art, Music and Community

September 18 – October 4, 2026
Various Locations

Barrie will put creativity in the spotlight this autumn as Culture Days 2026 brings art, music, heritage and community activities to locations throughout the city.

Running from September 18 to October 4, 2026, Culture Days is part of a nationwide celebration designed to encourage Canadians to participate in arts and culture. In Barrie, residents and visitors can discover local artists, attend special events and take part in hands-on experiences.

The annual celebration also creates opportunities to discover the people and organizations shaping Barrie’s cultural community. Better yet, Culture Days activities are designed to make arts and culture approachable and accessible.

A Celebration of Creativity Across Barrie

Culture Days is recognised as Canada’s largest cross-country celebration of arts, culture and creativity. Communities across the country participate through free events, performances, exhibitions and interactive activities.

Barrie’s programme brings that national celebration to a local level. The City of Barrie, artists and cultural organizations work together to introduce audiences to different creative disciplines.

The city’s cultural partners include Barrie Public Library, The Campus Gallery at Georgian College and MacLaren Art Centre. Additional programming is available through participating organizations.

Barrie Culture Days 2026 Events

The celebration begins on September 18 with the Culture Days 2026 Flag Raising, taking place from 1 to 1:30 p.m. It is followed by a performance from the Baytowne Big Band from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

On September 19, Healing in Colour: A Community Art Workshop on Black Health runs from 10 a.m. to noon. A second session takes place on September 29 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Families can get creative at MacLaren Art Centre on September 20. Family Sundays: I “Heart” MacLaren offers sessions from 1 to 2 p.m. and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Another thought-provoking event arrives on September 24. The Death Café, running from 6 to 7:30 p.m., provides an opportunity for community conversation.

Meanwhile, the MacLaren’s anniversary celebrations become an important part of Culture Days in October. MacLaren Celebrates: Music and Memories takes place on October 1 from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Then, on October 3, the gallery hosts its 40th Anniversary Open House from noon to 4 p.m. The Culture Days programme concludes on October 4 with Exploring The Album: Artist Talk with Christina Leslie from 2 to 3 p.m.

Two Special Art Projects

Culture Days visitors can also explore two longer-running art initiatives.

The I “Heart” MacLaren Exhibition runs from September 10 to October 18, 2026. Created in recognition of the MacLaren Art Centre’s 40th anniversary, the exhibition features hearts painted by members of the community. Together, the works reflect creativity, connection and the community’s relationship with the gallery.

A second project, Recalculating: MacLaren Sign Project, opens on October 3, 2026, and continues until May 30, 2027.

The public art project showcases imaginative road-sign designs created by children and youth from several Barrie schools and Youth Haven. A jury from the City of Barrie and MacLaren Art Centre selected works for the exhibition. More than 80 artworks were created for the overall project.

Doors Open Barrie Returns

Architecture and local history also join the Culture Days programme when Doors Open Barrie returns on September 26, 2026.

The event gives residents and visitors an opportunity to explore participating sites while learning more about Barrie’s arts, heritage and business community. Free hands-on arts activities will also be incorporated into participating locations.

Pairing Doors Open with Culture Days broadens the experience beyond galleries and performance spaces. It encourages visitors to explore buildings, local stories and places they may pass every day without seeing what happens inside.

Discover Barrie’s Growing Arts Community

Culture Days offers more than a calendar of things to do. It gives audiences an opportunity to meet creators, explore unfamiliar art forms and discover cultural spaces throughout Barrie.

Importantly, the programme welcomes people who may not regularly visit a gallery, attend an arts workshop or participate in a cultural event. The emphasis on free, public experiences helps remove barriers while encouraging people of different ages and backgrounds to participate.

The programme is also still evolving. The City of Barrie notes that additional 2026 Culture Days programming will be announced as it is confirmed.

With exhibitions, live music, community workshops, artist conversations and Doors Open Barrie, the 2026 celebration provides plenty of reasons to explore the city’s creative side.

Barrie Culture Days runs from September 18 to October 4, 2026, at various locations throughout Barrie. Visitors should check the programme before heading out, as individual event locations, registration requirements and schedules may vary.
