The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) in Toronto is set to unveil Paul McCartney Photographs 1963–64: Eyes of the Storm, a compelling exhibition offering an intimate look at one of the most electrifying periods in music history. Opening on February 18, 2026, the show presents more than 250 photographs drawn from Sir Paul McCartney’s personal archive and organised by London’s National Portrait Gallery.

A Rare View from Inside Beatlemania

This extraordinary exhibition chronicles the meteoric rise of The Beatles as they transitioned from beloved British performers to global sensations known as Beatlemania. Taken between December 1963 and February 1964, the images capture life on the road, moments behind the scenes, and the energy of fans and media that pursued the band across England, Paris, and the United States.

What makes Eyes of the Storm particularly compelling is that McCartney himself was behind the lens. His photographs—shot on a Pentax 35 mm camera—offer a rare, insider perspective on a cultural moment that reshaped popular music and youth culture. Many scenes are candid and unguarded: bandmates John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr relaxing after long days of travel, preparing for performances, and navigating the frenzy of their rising fame.

From Liverpool to America: The Visual Story Unfolds

Organised chronologically, the exhibition begins with the earliest days of concentrated Beatlemania in Liverpool and London. It then moves to the band’s arrival in Paris on January 14, 1964, highlighting their time spent rehearsing, performing, and engaging with press. The journey culminates in their groundbreaking U.S. debut, including their now-legendary appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show, which drew unprecedented viewership and cemented The Beatles’ place in global pop culture.

The AGO’s presentation also incorporates video clips, archival materials, and contextual displays that deepen the narrative of the Beatles’ early touring experience. Curated by Sir Paul McCartney with Sarah Brown for MPL Communications and Rosie Broadley for the National Portrait Gallery, the exhibition has been thoughtfully adapted for the AGO by Jim Shedden, Curator of Special Projects and Director of Publishing.

Members of the AGO will receive exclusive early access from February 18 to March 22, 2026, with the exhibition opening to the general public on March 24, 2026. Admission is free for AGO Members, Annual Passholders, and Ontarians under 25.

Paul McCartney Photographs 1963–64: Eyes of the Storm invites visitors to witness the Beatles’ early years through the eyes of someone who lived the experience from within—a rare visual diary of a cultural revolution.
