Young People’s Theatre (YPT), Canada’s largest and oldest professional theatre for young people, has announced its compelling 2025/2026 season. Running from October 2025 through April 2026, the season features six vibrant productions that explore memory, imagination, identity, and connection—crafted especially for children, families, and educators.

Season Highlights

The season opens with The Mush Hole (October 6–17, 2025), a powerful multidisciplinary performance that examines the lived experiences of survivors of the Mohawk Institute Residential School. Created by Six Nations artist Santee Smith and Kaha:wi Dance Theatre, the production honours truth and resilience through dance, theatre, and movement. Recommended for ages 11+ (Grade 5 and up), it offers a meaningful way for young audiences to engage with Canada’s history.

Immediately following is Where the Wild Things Are (October 18 – November 2, 2025), a whimsical adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s beloved picture book. This imaginative journey through childhood emotions invites the very young to roar with Max and sail to where the wild things live. Perfect for ages 3–7 (JK–Grade 2), it’s a gentle and visually rich introduction to live theatre.

Holiday magic arrives with Shrek the Musical (November 13–December 30, 2025). Based on the DreamWorks film and William Steig’s book, this hilarious and heartwarming production celebrates difference, self-acceptance, and true friendship. With big laughs, catchy songs, and unforgettable characters, Shrek is a delightful spectacle for ages 6+ (Grade 1 and up).

In February, Tree (February 14–22, 2026) offers a unique experience for the tiniest theatre-goers. Designed for babies and toddlers aged 6 months to 3 years, this sensory performance invites caregivers and little ones to explore nature-inspired textures, sounds, and shapes in an intimate, gentle setting.

Running alongside it is Love You Forever and More Munsch (February 19–Mar. 21, 2026), a spirited collection of Robert Munsch stories brought to life on stage. Brimming with energy, silliness, and heart, this lively production is tailored to young audiences aged 4–9 (JK–Grade 3) and their families.

The season closes with Boys With Cars (April 13–24, 2026), a bold and emotionally charged solo performance by Anita Majumdar. Tackling themes of consent, gender dynamics, and cultural expectations, the play is presented through storytelling, classical Indian dance, and hip hop. Recommended for ages 13+ (Grade 7 and up), this important work empowers critical dialogue among teens.

Empowering Youth Through Storytelling

Through this season’s diverse slate of productions, YPT reaffirms its commitment to telling stories that reflect the experiences, challenges, and imaginations of young people today. School matinees, study guides, and accessible performances continue to be cornerstones of YPT’s inclusive approach.
