Few names in popular music evoke instant recognition quite like Madonna and Cher. They are not simply entertainers; they are cultural forces who have shaped fashion, identity, and music across generations. This November, Toronto audiences will see these icons in a whole new light when The Musical Stage Company unveils its latest UnCovered series: UnCovered: Madonna & Cher.

Running for nearly two decades, UnCovered has built a reputation for taking familiar songs and turning them inside out—finding new textures, hidden emotions, and theatrical colours that surprise even the most devoted fans. This year’s focus on Madonna and Cher feels both inevitable and inspired. After all, these two women have long defied conventions, reinvented themselves with fearless creativity, and produced anthems that remain timeless.

The Power of Reinvention

Madonna has been dubbed the Queen of Reinvention for good reason. From the provocative edge of Like a Virgin to the spiritual resonance of Like a Prayer and the sophistication of Ray of Light, she has always pushed the boundaries of what pop could be. Cher, equally unstoppable, is a master of longevity. With a career spanning six decades, she has moved seamlessly from folk-pop to disco, power ballads, and electronic dance anthems like Believe, all while cultivating an unapologetic, larger-than-life presence.

Together, their catalogues capture both evolution and endurance—two qualities that align perfectly with The Musical Stage Company’s mission to reinterpret familiar music in bold, unexpected ways.

The Artists Behind the Tribute

The 2025 edition brings together an ensemble of Canada’s most celebrated voices. Juno Award-winning stars Steven Page and Divine Brown headline the production, joined by Jackie Richardson, Sara Farb, Elm Reyes, Nathan Carroll, Jeigh Madjus, and Annika Tupper. Each performer brings a distinct style and emotional register, ensuring that every song is not simply sung but lived.

Rather than mimicry or tribute, UnCovered thrives on reinvention. That means Vogue may shimmer as a sultry theatrical number, while If I Could Turn Back Time might emerge as a stripped-down ballad, revealing vulnerability beneath its bravado. For audiences, it’s an invitation to hear songs they know by heart as if for the very first time.

A Vision for Celebration

Michael Rubinoff, Artistic Director of The Musical Stage Company, describes this year’s UnCovered as “a vibrant, electrifying tribute” to two of the most influential voices in pop history. Kevin Wong, the show’s arranger and music supervisor, highlights the balance of glamour and emotional punch, promising that while the show leans into celebration, it also uncovers the heart at the centre of each song.

Why It Matters

At its core, UnCovered: Madonna & Cher is more than a concert—it’s a conversation between past and present, between icons and the artists who reinterpret them, and between songs we’ve danced to for decades and the fresh meanings they reveal on stage.

For audiences, the evening offers not just nostalgia but discovery. It’s proof that great music doesn’t just last—it evolves, surprises, and continues to tell our stories in new ways.
