Through the Eyes of God: Theatre Passe Muraille Presents a Powerful World Premiere by Anusree Roy
February 1 – 21, 2026
Theatre Passe Muraille Backspace, 16 Ryerson Ave.
Theatre Passe Muraille announces the world premiere of Through the Eyes of God, a compelling new work by acclaimed playwright Anusree Roy, running from February 1 to 21, 2026. This highly anticipated production marks Roy’s return to the character of Chaya, first introduced in her award-winning and box-office success Pyaasa.
Set two decades after the events of Pyaasa, the play reunites audiences with Chaya, now a young mother confronting poverty, loss, and the brutal realities of an unforgiving system. Arrested for stealing rice to feed her daughter, Krishna, Chaya is thrust into an even deeper nightmare when she learns her child has been trafficked to Delhi. What follows is a harrowing journey driven by maternal love, where each decision carries devastating consequences.
A Story of Motherhood and Survival
Through the Eyes of God is a deeply emotional examination of what it means to be a mother in a world shaped by inequality and systemic failure. As Chaya pursues any possible lead to find her daughter, the play exposes the fragile line between hope and despair, and the sacrifices demanded by unconditional love. Roy’s writing offers a raw, unflinching look at resilience, moral complexity, and survival against overwhelming odds.
Creative Team and Artistic Vision
The production marks Anusree Roy’s return to Theatre Passe Muraille and is performed by Gabriella Sundar Singh, whose nuanced portrayal brings profound depth to Chaya’s story. Direction is led by Thomas Morgan Jones, a long-time collaborator of Roy and the original director of Pyaasa. Together, the creative team crafts a continuation that stands firmly on its own while honouring the emotional legacy of the original work.
A Long-Awaited Return
Reflecting on the creation of the play, Roy describes Through the Eyes of God as an unexpected but necessary return. The story emerged as a meditation on motherhood and inheritance—how love, protection, and sacrifice are passed from one generation to the next. Through Chaya’s journey, the play asks how far one can go for a child, and what that devotion ultimately costs.
With its urgent themes and intimate storytelling, Through the Eyes of God promises to be a powerful theatrical event, reaffirming Theatre Passe Muraille’s commitment to bold, socially engaged new work.
