Filmmakers from around the world are invited to submit their projects for consideration at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Recognised as one of the most influential film festivals internationally, the event offers a major platform for new storytelling, emerging voices, and established filmmakers.
Organised by the non-profit cultural institution dedicated to promoting film and screen-based storytelling, TIFF’s mission is to broaden perspectives and inspire audiences through cinema. Beyond the annual festival, the organisation runs year-round initiatives including screenings, industry programmes, and educational opportunities that support the global film community.
At the heart of TIFF’s activities is its headquarters, TIFF Lightbox in downtown Toronto, which houses multiple cinemas along with learning spaces and cultural programming. Through these initiatives, TIFF continues to play a key role in shaping film culture in Canada and internationally.
The Festival Experience
Held each September, the Toronto International Film Festival spans 11 days and showcases hundreds of films from around the world. The event attracts filmmakers, distributors, critics, and movie lovers eager to discover the latest works from celebrated directors and emerging talent.
Films are selected based on creativity, originality, and overall quality, with premiere status often playing an important role in the selection process. Each year’s programme highlights a diverse range of storytelling styles and cinematic voices.
In addition to public screenings, TIFF offers a vibrant industry environment where filmmakers can connect with producers, buyers, and other professionals. The festival is known for encouraging dialogue between creators and audiences, creating an atmosphere where discussions about the art and business of filmmaking flourish.
A Major Cultural Event
TIFF has grown into one of the most significant cultural gatherings in the world. Its impact extends beyond cinema, contributing substantially to Toronto’s cultural and economic landscape. The festival draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, including international press and industry delegates.
The previous edition of the festival welcomed more than 760,000 attendees and featured films and series from dozens of countries. Thousands of industry representatives and journalists attended the event, while large crowds gathered for free outdoor programming and celebrations on Festival Street.
Through its scale and global reach, the festival offers filmmakers unparalleled visibility and the opportunity to connect with audiences and industry leaders alike.
New Industry Opportunities
A major development arriving in 2026 is the launch of TIFF: The Market, a new content marketplace designed to strengthen the festival’s role in the global entertainment industry. Supported by a significant investment from the Government of Canada and partners including Telefilm Canada, the initiative will create new opportunities for buying, selling, and developing screen-based projects.
The marketplace will focus on film, television, intellectual property, and immersive media, helping creators and companies connect with international distributors and investors. By expanding its industry programming, TIFF aims to further support sustainable growth within the global screen sector.
Awards and Recognition
The festival also celebrates cinematic excellence through a range of awards. Among the most prestigious is the People’s Choice Award, widely regarded as an important indicator of awards-season success. Additional honours recognise achievements in documentary filmmaking, international cinema, and Canadian productions.
Short film categories are particularly significant, as winners in select divisions become eligible for consideration at the Academy Awards.
