In Support of Canadian Opera Company
On October 22, 2026, the Canadian Opera Company welcomes audiences and supporters to Centre Stage: Ensemble Studio Competition & Gala, a signature fundraising event that shines a spotlight on the future of Canadian opera.
Presented at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, the evening combines the thrill of live competition with the elegance of an exclusive gala dinner, all while supporting one of the country’s leading artist development programmes.
Bringing together arts patrons, cultural leaders, and opera enthusiasts, Centre Stage offers a rare opportunity to witness exceptional emerging talent at a pivotal moment in their careers.
A Night of Extraordinary Performances
At the heart of the evening is the Ensemble Studio Competition, where Canada’s most promising young opera artists perform alongside the acclaimed COC Orchestra under the direction of Music Director Johannes Debus.
The competition is known for delivering powerful performances and unforgettable moments as singers compete for career-changing opportunities and recognition. Audience members experience opera at its most immediate and exciting, discovering voices that may soon grace international stages.
Competition tickets start at $35, with special pricing available for attendees under 30, making the event accessible to younger audiences eager to experience live opera in a dynamic setting.
An Elegant Gala on the Opera Stage
Following the competition, Centre Stage transforms into an extraordinary gala experience. Guests are invited directly onto the stage of the Four Seasons Centre for an elegant dinner and celebration in support of the COC Ensemble Studio.
The unique setting creates an intimate atmosphere unlike any traditional performance evening. Surrounded by the grandeur of the opera house itself, attendees enjoy fine dining while celebrating the artists and programmes shaping the future of the art form.
Tables, gala tickets, and sponsorship opportunities are available through the Canadian Opera Company’s Centre Stage team.
Supporting the COC Ensemble Studio
More than a glamorous evening, Centre Stage plays a vital role in supporting the COC Ensemble Studio, the company’s nationally respected training programme for emerging Canadian opera professionals.
The Ensemble Studio provides singers and pianists with intensive coaching, language studies, movement and acting instruction, as well as mentorship from internationally renowned opera professionals. Participants also gain invaluable practical experience by performing and understudying in mainstage productions.
Since its founding in 1980, the programme has helped launch the careers of nearly 240 Canadian artists. Distinguished alumni include Ben Heppner, Emily D’Angelo, Krisztina Szabó, Ambur Braid, and Gordon Bintner.
By attending Centre Stage, supporters directly contribute to the continued growth of Canadian opera and help ensure emerging artists receive the mentorship, training, and opportunities needed to thrive on the world stage.
