Summer Opera Lyric Theatre Returns with a Showcase of Canada’s Emerging Opera Talent

July 24 – August 2, 2026
Alumnae Theatre, 70 Berkeley Street

Toronto’s opera lovers will once again have the chance to experience outstanding performances from Canada’s next generation of vocal talent. Summer Opera Lyric Theatre (SOLT) returns from July 24 to August 2, 2026, with a festival that celebrates both emerging artists and beloved operatic works.

For nearly four decades, SOLT has provided aspiring performers with an intensive training programme. Under the leadership of Guillermo Silva-Marin, participants spend eight weeks developing vocal skills, dramatic expression, and character interpretation. As a result, audiences enjoy polished productions performed by some of Canada’s most promising young artists.

Three Productions, Three Unique Experiences

This year’s festival features three contrasting productions. Each work highlights a different style of opera and music theatre.

The season opens with Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Medium. This gripping psychological drama explores fear, illusion, and the supernatural. Performances take place on July 24, 29, 30, and August 1, 2026.

Meanwhile, audiences can enjoy Davies and Benson’s Earnest, the Importance of Being. Inspired by Oscar Wilde’s famous comedy, the production delivers humour, wit, and lively musical storytelling. Performances run on July 25, 26, 29, and 31, 2026.

In contrast, Leoš Janáček’s Katya Kabanova examines love, duty, and social pressure. The emotionally powerful opera will be presented on July 25, 28, August 1, and August 2, 2026.

According to Silva-Marin, the three productions explore themes ranging from supernatural terror to social repression and high comedy. Furthermore, all performances will be presented in English to enhance accessibility and audience engagement.

Developing the Next Generation of Performers

Since 1986, SOLT has helped launch the careers of numerous Canadian opera artists. Many former participants now perform on stages across Canada and around the world.

This summer, 27 performers from universities, conservatories, and professional companies across the country will take part in the programme. Throughout the training period, they will work closely with experienced instructors, coaches, and guest lecturers.

In addition, industry professionals will lead workshops covering performance techniques, vocal development, and stagecraft. These opportunities help participants gain valuable experience before advancing in their careers.

Experienced Artistic Leadership

Silva-Marin will direct all three productions. Meanwhile, the music team includes returning conductors Sabina Rzazade and Minira Najafzade. Joining them this season is Vlad Soloviev, who makes his SOLT debut as music director for The Medium.

Together, the creative team brings a wealth of experience to the programme. Consequently, participants receive professional-level training while preparing for public performances.

A Summer Tradition for Toronto Audiences

All performances will take place at the historic Alumnae Theatre, located at 70 Berkeley Street in downtown Toronto. The venue offers air conditioning, wheelchair accessibility, nearby parking, and convenient transit connections.
