The Oasis ZooRun returns this year with an inspiring blend of outdoor activity, community spirit, and meaningful conservation efforts. Supporting the Toronto Zoo and the Toronto Zoo Wildlife Conservancy, this annual event invites participants to get active while contributing to vital wildlife initiatives.

Taking place virtually from September 1–30, 2026, and in person on Saturday, September 12, 2026, the ZooRun offers flexibility for participants of all lifestyles. Race day includes a 10K, 5K, and the popular CubRun, which has already sold out—highlighting the strong community support behind the event. Whether you are chasing a personal best or enjoying a relaxed walk, the inclusive atmosphere makes it accessible to all ages and abilities.

Participants benefit from complimentary parking and admission to the Zoo on event day, while spectators receive discounted entry, making it a full day of engagement with wildlife and conservation.

Racing to Protect Blanding’s Turtles

More than just a run, the Oasis ZooRun shines a spotlight on the urgent need to protect the Blanding’s turtle, a globally endangered species facing ongoing threats to its survival. Known for its distinctive bright yellow throat and long lifespan, this freshwater turtle has experienced severe population declines due to habitat loss and human impact.

In 2012, the situation became critical when only a small number of turtles remained in Rouge National Urban Park. This alarming reality underscored the importance of immediate conservation efforts and inspired the development of targeted recovery programmes.

The Turtle Headstart Programme at the Zoo has since become a cornerstone of these efforts. By carefully incubating eggs, raising hatchlings, and nurturing them for two years before release, conservationists significantly improve the turtles’ chances of survival in the wild. This early protection helps them grow large enough to better evade predators and adapt to their natural environment.

To date, more than 542 head-started turtles have been released, with a continued goal of introducing at least 50 juveniles into the wild each spring.

Supporting Conservation Through Community

This year’s ZooRun aims to raise $110,000 in support of the Turtle Headstart Programme and its new home within the Community Conservation Centre. This purpose-built space will enhance incubation and care efforts while also serving as an educational hub where visitors can observe hatchlings and learn about conservation initiatives firsthand.

The event encourages participants to go beyond simply taking part by embracing fundraising opportunities. Donations can be made during registration, and sharing fundraising pages with friends and family helps amplify impact. Every contribution, no matter how small, plays a role in protecting species at risk and preserving biodiversity.
