Tarragon Theatre, 30 Bridgman Ave, Toronto
Toronto’s Tarragon Theatre has officially announced its 2026–2027 season, unveiling a dynamic line-up of world premieres, Canadian productions and innovative collaborations that continue the company’s longstanding commitment to new play development. The upcoming season reflects Tarragon’s reputation as one of Canada’s leading contemporary theatre companies, presenting stories that explore identity, family, culture and social change through a wide range of theatrical styles.
Located in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood, Tarragon Theatre has spent more than five decades championing Canadian playwrights and emerging voices. The new season once again balances established artists with rising creators while featuring productions that move between intimate storytelling, experimental performance and large-scale theatrical experiences.
Opening the Season with Prophetess
The 2026–2027 season begins with Prophetess, written by Ho Ka Kei (Jeff Ho), running from September 29 to October 25, 2026. The production marks another major work from the acclaimed playwright known for exploring themes of race, identity and belonging within contemporary Canadian society. Directed by Mike Payette, the play launches Tarragon’s season with a production expected to blend emotional storytelling with sharp political and cultural insight.
Following this, Tarragon presents MONKS, created and directed by Veronica Hortigüela and Annie Luján. Running through October 20 to November 8, 2026, the production continues the theatre’s embrace of visually inventive and interdisciplinary performance work.
International and Canadian Collaborations
One of the season’s most anticipated productions is The Night Logan Woke Up, written by celebrated Québécois playwright Michel Marc Bouchard and translated by Robert Chafe. Running from November 17 to December 13, 2026, the production is a co-production between Tarragon Theatre, Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland and Resource Centre for the Arts Theatre. The play is widely recognised for its psychological tension, family secrets and haunting atmosphere.
From February 2 to February 28, 2027, Tarragon partners with Outside the March for Call Me By My Cousin’s Name, written by Anahita Dehbonehie. Described as an immersive diaspora gothic, the production examines identity, family expectations and cultural performance through a contemporary lens. The collaboration continues Tarragon’s history of working with innovative Toronto theatre companies to expand theatrical forms and audience experiences.
Returning Canadian Theatre Voices
The spring portion of the season includes The Shoplifters, written and directed by Morris Panych, running from March 2 to March 28, 2027. Known for his dark humour and sharply observed dialogue, Panych remains one of Canada’s most celebrated playwrights and directors.
Audiences will also see You’re Still Here by Katherine Gauthier from March 23 to April 18, 2027, followed by Definition by Luke Reece from April 27 to May 23, 2027. Definition is a co-production with Obsidian Theatre Company, further highlighting Tarragon’s continued investment in collaboration and diverse storytelling.
Closing the season is YAGA by Kat Sandler, running from May 11 to June 6, 2027. Sandler’s work is known for combining dark comedy, supernatural elements and emotionally grounded characters, making the production a fitting finale for a season focused on bold contemporary voices.
Continuing a Legacy of Canadian Theatre
