On June 6, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, Shared Rhythms: Music at West Block transforms an urban gathering space into a vibrant open-air stage. Hosted at The Bentway’s West Block—located at 500 Lakeshore Boulevard West—this free, drop-in event invites visitors to experience an afternoon of live music, connection, and cultural exchange.

Set against the backdrop of a newly unveiled mural, the event creates a welcoming atmosphere where neighbours and visitors alike can pause, listen, and engage with the rhythms of the city.

Music Inspired by Cultural Exchange

Curated in collaboration with Small World Music, the programme features musicians from its Incubator initiative, highlighting emerging and established voices from Iranian and broader SWANA (Southwest Asian and North African) communities.

For decades, Small World Music has played a vital role in championing diversity across the Greater Toronto Area, supporting underrepresented and newcomer artists while fostering meaningful opportunities for creative expression. Shared Rhythms continues this legacy by offering a platform for musicians whose work reflects global influences and contemporary perspectives.

Art Meets Public Space

The performances unfold beneath Majles / Sitting Room, a striking mural by Anahita Akhavan. This large-scale artwork serves as both a visual centrepiece and a symbolic gathering place, reinforcing the event’s theme of shared space and dialogue.

As music fills the courtyard and staircases, the environment becomes an immersive cultural experience. The blending of sound, art, and architecture encourages visitors to see public space in new ways—transforming everyday surroundings into a site of creativity and connection.

A Flexible and Inclusive Experience

Designed as a casual, drop-in event, Shared Rhythms allows attendees to experience performances at their own pace. Whether staying for a full set or simply passing through, visitors can engage with the music in a way that suits them. The event takes place outdoors and will proceed rain or shine, reinforcing its accessible and community-focused spirit.

Accessibility considerations are in place, with designated entry points and event staff available to assist visitors. While some seating is located on staircases, alternative viewing areas ensure that more guests can comfortably participate.

A Moment of Connection in the City

Shared Rhythms: Music at West Block highlights the power of music to bring people together across cultures and communities. By combining live performance with public art, the event creates a shared listening space that celebrates diversity, creativity, and belonging in Toronto.

As melodies echo through the West Block, the event offers more than entertainment—it provides a meaningful opportunity to connect, reflect, and celebrate the cultural richness that defines the city.
