Paradisum by Recirquel: A Visionary Cirque Danse Journey

Paradisum by Recirquel: A Visionary Cirque Danse Journey

February 13 – 14, 2026
St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, Bluma Appel Theatre

Paradisum, created by Hungary’s internationally celebrated contemporary circus company Recirquel, is a powerful and immersive performance that redefines the boundaries between circus, dance and theatre. Directed and choreographed by artistic director Bence Vági, the production invites audiences into a mythic realm where movement becomes the sole form of communication and the human body speaks in a shared, universal language.

Set within a symbolic post-apocalyptic world, Paradisum imagines a space where humanity begins again after silence and destruction. The performers emerge as elemental beings, driven by instinct rather than words, searching for harmony, renewal and the soul of the world—anima mundi. Rather than following a traditional linear storyline, the work unfolds as a series of ritualistic scenes that evoke purification, birth, awakening and collective memory.

Cirque Danse: Where Acrobatics Meet Contemporary Dance

At the heart of Paradisum is Recirquel’s signature genre, cirque danse, a seamless fusion of contemporary dance and high-level circus technique. The performers move effortlessly between disciplines, including aerial hoop, straps, swinging pole, hand balancing and intricate floor choreography. Each act is woven into the overall composition, ensuring that technical virtuosity never overshadows emotional expression.

The physical language of the show is both raw and refined. Powerful group sequences suggest tribal unity, while intimate solos explore vulnerability and transformation. Precision, strength and fluidity coexist, creating a visual rhythm that feels organic and deeply human. The result is a performance that is as emotionally resonant as it is physically astonishing.A Sensory World of Sound, Light and Symbolism

Paradisum is further elevated by its striking visual and sonic design. Composer Edina Szirtes’ original score blends percussive rhythms, atmospheric soundscapes and melodic motifs to underscore the production’s ritualistic tone. The music pulses through the performance, guiding emotional shifts and amplifying moments of tension, release and transcendence.

The stage design and costumes, conceived by Bence Vági and Emese Kasza, create an otherworldly environment that feels timeless and elemental. Sculptural forms, textured fabrics and carefully crafted lighting by Attila Lenzsér transform the stage into a living landscape—at once fragile, powerful and constantly evolving.

Since its world premiere in August 2024, Paradisum has garnered international acclaim for its originality and depth, touring major festivals and theatres across Europe and North America. In 2026, the production continues its global journey, offering Canadian audiences the opportunity to experience one of contemporary circus’s most visionary works.

More than a spectacle, Paradisum is an invitation to reflect on humanity’s shared instincts for rebirth, connection and balance. Through breathtaking physical artistry and evocative symbolism, Recirquel delivers a transformative experience that lingers long after the final moment of stillness.
