When Music Paints a Picture: Mussorgsky Comes Alive in Toronto
April 12, 2026
Ada Slaight Hall, Daniels Spectrum. 585 Dundas St. E.
Toronto’s Daniels Spectrum will host a unique cultural event on Sunday, April 12, transforming the venue into a living gallery of art and music. Internationally celebrated visual artist Paula Arciniega collaborates with the Hannaford Street Silver Band, under conductor James Sommerville, and pianist Jamie Parker to present a bold reimagining of Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.
Composed in 1874, Mussorgsky’s work was inspired by the paintings of Russian artist Viktor Hartmann. Arciniega now interprets Mussorgsky’s musical vision, creating 15 large-scale paintings that bring a visual dimension to the iconic score.
“This project is about dissolving the boundaries between seeing and hearing,” Arciniega explains. “Audiences will feel the music as much as they see it.”
Brass Brilliance Meets Immersive Design
The Hannaford Street Silver Band, Canada’s only professional brass ensemble, will deliver Mussorgsky’s grand themes with precision and energy. Under Sommerville’s guidance, the performance transforms the space into a fully immersive environment, where music, art, and architecture converge.
Jen Stephen, HSSB’s Executive Director and leading musician, highlights the ensemble’s mission: “We embrace interdisciplinary creation, connecting musicians, artists, and communities to produce something transformative.”
Arciniega and Stephen’s collaboration showcases how women leaders are shaping Toronto’s arts scene, challenging traditional concert formats, and expanding the reach of classical music.
Setting the Stage with Gershwin
The afternoon opens with pianist Jamie Parker performing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, paired with a new piece by Arciniega, offering audiences a layered, multisensory experience before Mussorgsky’s masterpiece unfolds.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition also seeks to engage young audiences. An anonymous donor has sponsored 25 tickets for youth from Toronto’s Regent Park neighbourhood, emphasising that classical music and visual art are living, evolving forms.
Tickets are available for $45 plus fees through Ticketmaster, paulaarciniega.com, and hssb.ca. This one-time performance promises a rare artistic collision—music and visual art in perfect harmony—demonstrating that classical masterpieces can be as bold, innovative, and immersive as contemporary art itself.
