Experience the York Corpus Christi Plays – A Day of Medieval Theatre for All Ages

June 7 – 8, 2025
Burwash Quad/University of Toronto, 89 Charles St. West

Step back in time and immerse yourself in one of the most spectacular theatrical traditions of the Middle Ages! The York Corpus Christi Plays are returning to life in a vibrant, day-long outdoor festival hosted by Poculi Ludique Societas (PLS) and sponsored by the Centre for Renaissance and Reformation Studies (CRRS). Held entirely outdoors and free for all ages, this once-in-a-generation event brings to life the historic cycle of biblical plays as they were performed in 14th-century England.

Experience over 50 short plays, each based on biblical stories and medieval devotional texts, staged in sequence by 17 different theatre groups from across North America. The performances take place on authentic, mobile wagon stages, just as they did in medieval York from 1376 to 1569. With actors in period costumes, traditional staging, and lively storytelling, it’s a faithful recreation of a centuries-old community theatre experience—right in the modern world.

From The Creation of the World to Noah’s Ark to The Last Judgment, the plays vary in tone—some humorous, others heartfelt—but all are accessible, engaging, and suitable for both children and adults. (Plays that may not be appropriate for younger viewers will be noted on our website and program.)

This is a come-and-go event: with plays performed in rotation at three separate locations, you’re free to wander between scenes, take breaks for snacks, and enjoy the festival at your own pace. Bring blankets, folding chairs, sunhats, or umbrellas and settle in for an unforgettable theatrical journey.

About York Corpus Christi Plays

The York Corpus Christi Plays originated in 14th-century York, England, as part of the Corpus Christi festival, a major religious celebration. This cycle of over 40 short plays dramatized biblical stories—from Creation to the Last Judgment—and was designed to teach Christian doctrine through theatre. Unique to York, each play was performed by a local guild (like carpenters or fishmongers), often portraying scenes relevant to their trade, such as shipwrights performing Noah’s Ark.

Performed on movable wagon stages, the plays traveled through the city, stopping at set stations so audiences could follow the story in sequence throughout the day. This blend of religious devotion, civic pride, and dramatic spectacle remained a key tradition until the Reformation led to their suppression in the 16th century. Today, the York Plays are revived to reconnect modern audiences with medieval culture, faith, and community storytelling.
